It first appeared on the island. as a shade for the Sri Maha Bhodi sapling brought here by their Sangamitta, the daughter of Emperor Asoka and founder of an order of Buddhist nuns in Sri Lanka. She was accompanied by a retinue of 500 Bhikkunis and 18 artisans representing diverse crafts and industries, necessary to perform Sri Maha Bodhi-associated rituals.
