The alam, a finial or standard mounted on top of a pole, was carried at the forefront of a company of soldiers, and served as a rallying point in the confusion of battle. Religious observance was another function: in the Shi ite-dominated Deccan, on the tenth day of Muharram, called Ashura, tearful ceremonies were performed to lament the tragic death and defeat of Husain.
